Labná: Palace Mask [June 13, 2004]

The largest mask of the palace dominates the frieze above this doorway. With an protruding three-dimensional muzzle and extended trunk-like nose, the mask is spectacularly framed by ear-spools sprouting vegetation or possibly smoke.

The whole mask assemblage, in turn, is framed by two standing human figures. The lower body of one of these can be seen on the far left and sports elaborate sandals and woven loincloth. All that remains of the figure on the right is a single leg.
