Xpujil: Río Bec style false temple crowns central tower
The tower is topped by a small structure simulating a temple, with a recessed masonry rectangle in the center representing a door. A member of the Carnegie Expedition team of 1938 must have climbed this tower, because Ruppert reports that the small niche inside the simulated doorway was 38 cm. wide and 32 cm. high and deep! Surrounding the door are the remains of a Chenes style monster mask similar to that seen in Str. II at Chicanna. The frontal mask above the doorway has fallen, but the profile serpent masks bracketing the doorway are still discernable.
